8th Round of GCLS: Bike/Walk 2 School/Work (Romania)
The Mureș Community Foundation presents the Bike/Walk 2 School/Work campaign, addressing urban mobility challenges in Târgu Mureș by encouraging active commuting among students, parents, and employees. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and promote eco-friendly habits. Aligned with SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 13 (Climate Action), the project promotes healthier and more sustainable commuting options.
Key activities of the campaign include:
- Urban Mobility Study – A survey of students to identify the most common walking and biking routes, focusing on improving safety and infrastructure.
- School Participation – Six local schools will engage in the campaign, with students paired with volunteers from local companies to walk or bike together, promoting active commuting habits.
- Corporate Engagement – Five local companies will encourage employees to participate, with volunteers helping students on their way to school.
- Traffic Safety Education – Students will attend practical and theoretical lessons on road safety, with an emphasis on cycling and micro-mobility.
- Weekly Group Rides/Walks – Every Friday, cycling and walking events will be organized for different age groups, guided by teachers, parents, and volunteers on mapped, safe routes.
- Workshops and Impact Assessment – Workshops will engage local stakeholders to assess the campaign’s impact on student habits and identify opportunities for improved cycling and walking infrastructure in the city.
The campaign aims to increase active travel by 5-10%, with a focus on sustaining these habits after the campaign ends.
The communication strategy includes social media engagement, media coverage, WhatsApp groups, school materials, and public workshops, all designed to raise awareness and encourage sustainable mobility.
Through this initiative, the Mureș Community Foundation is helping Târgu Mureș take significant steps toward a more sustainable, active, and eco-conscious future.
