The Global Challenges Local Solutions (GCLS) program helps Community Foundations (CFs) share the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the 8th of the program, 12 CFs are working on projects that promote and communicate the SDGs in their local communities.
Choosing SDGs for Local Needs
Each foundation has the choice to focus on all 17 SDGs or select a few that are most important for their community. Some organizations, like those from Făgăraș and Stara Zagora, are working on all 17 SDGs, while others choose a smaller number. This flexibility helps them respond to local challenges in the best way.
Most Common SDGs Communicated
The CFs are focusing on different SDGs. The most common ones include:
- SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
Seven projects talk about how to make cities and towns more sustainable, especially through better transport and public spaces. - SDG 13 – Climate Action
Six projects are raising awareness about climate change and encouraging more eco-friendly lifestyles. - SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
Five projects are focusing on mental health, access to care, and the well-being of local communities. - SDG 4 – Quality Education
Education plays a key role in five projects, often as a way to teach about other SDGs like climate and equality. - SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Four projects are showing how cooperation between organizations, businesses, and local government supports progress on the SDGs.
How CFs Communicate the SDGs
The foundations are using many creative and participatory ways to talk about the SDGs, including:
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Posters, social media, and local media are helping to spread the SDG message.
- Events and Consultations: Bikeathons, school activities, and local meetings give people a chance to join and share ideas.
- Storytelling: Real stories from the community help people understand how the SDGs connect to daily life.
- Educational Activities: Projects in schools and community centers help people learn and act.
Conclusion: Communicating the SDGs for Local Impact
The Community Foundations in the GCLS program are showing that good communication is key to making the SDGs visible and relevant. By focusing on local needs and working with people in the community, they are helping others understand the goals—and why they matter.
