Meet the GCLS Round 9 Grantees-Mures Community Foundation
Morning traffic outside many Romanian schools is increasingly dominated by long lines of cars, crowded sidewalks, and safety concerns for children. In many cities, parents feel they have little choice but to drive, while walking and cycling routes remain underused.
Safe School Streets will document practical solutions already being tested in Romania. Through a series of short videos, parents, teachers, local officials, and mobility experts will share their experiences with School Streets, Pedibus and Bicibus groups, Kiss&Ride zones, and campaigns that encourage children to walk or cycle to school. The videos will combine real-life stories with clear explanations of how these measures work in practice.
The topic is especially relevant in Romania, where traffic congestion, air pollution, and limited pedestrian infrastructure affect daily school journeys. Although successful examples exist across Europe, many communities are still unfamiliar with these approaches.
Viewers will discover concrete ideas for improving school surroundings, learn how local partnerships can support safer travel, and see how similar solutions could be adapted in their own communities.
The project addresses SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
