Meet the GCLS Round 9 Grantees- Messina Foundation
A former shantytown in Messina has become a place where people can see what a fair transition looks like in everyday life. Once marked by poor housing, energy poverty and social exclusion, Fondo Saccà now offers affordable homes, community services, shared public spaces and a renewable energy community that supports residents through a solidarity-based model.
The video campaign follows this transformation through two short documentaries and a video created by local students for their peers. Residents, educators, social workers and energy experts share their experiences, while young people tell the story in their own words. Together, the videos connect global Sustainable Development Goals with places and people that viewers can relate to.
For many students in Messina, the SDGs can seem distant or theoretical. These videos show how they take shape in one neighbourhood and encourage viewers to think about how social inclusion, clean energy and community action are connected.
This project addresses SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
