Bikeathon: Use Cycling to Start a Big Local Project and Fundraiser
We are happy to share a new Learning Material with you: a presentation about the Bikeathon. This is the main event of the Făgăraș Country Community Foundation (FCTF) in Romania. This project shows how to easily mix sports, fundraising, and community work.
FCTF is part of a large network of community foundations. Their Bikeathon is a great example of “Think Global | Act Local”. They actively support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their area.
Why This Presentation May Be Useful for You?
The Bikeathon presentation is a great guide for other GCLS program members, like Community Foundations and local NGOs. It teaches you how to:
- Build a Strong Fundraising Event:
- Big Results: The event has raised a total of 1,022,402 RON for 121 local projects over 11 years.
- Get Everyone Involved: The model shows six clear ways people can help: as a Cyclist, Ambassador, Supporter (donor), Volunteer, Sponsor, or by bringing a team.
- Engage Companies: It has a clear plan for corporate sponsorship. Importantly, 50% of the registration fees from company cyclists go directly to the causes they choose.
- Make Your Event Open to Everyone (Inclusive Design):
- The Bikeathon includes routes for all ages, from toddlers (1-3 years old – Frog race) to adults, and offers challenging MTB routes (25 km and 47 km).
- It includes a special route for wheelchairs and handbikes in The Popular Race (Drumul Șonei). This is a key lesson in making a big community event fully inclusive.
- Connect Local Action to Global SDGs:
- The project clearly links local community issues (like education and well-being, pages 6-8) to the global SDGs.
- This model shows how to use a popular sports event to promote global awareness while solving real local problems.
