Zaječar has seen its population and economy decline since the late 1980s, leaving many residents with a sense that little is happening and that the city has lost its direction. But alongside empty streets and fading industrial sites, people are building businesses, creating art, preserving heritage and finding new reasons to stay or return.

“The Strength Within” is a seven-part video campaign that brings these local stories together. The opening film looks honestly at Zaječar’s challenges, while six short documentaries follow people and places creating new possibilities. Viewers will meet a family winery led by women, a young family making traditional balms, a woman running a DIY streetwear brand, young people using the Youth Center, citizens preserving industrial history, and artists transforming grey walls through murals.

The stories connect everyday actions to three Sustainable Development Goals: sustainable communities, decent work and economic growth, and gender equality. They also show how returnees bring knowledge and energy back to the city, and how local cooperation can turn individual efforts into community activity.

Through interviews, real places and personal experiences, viewers can discover how global goals relate to life in Zaječar—and see practical examples of what residents can do together to shape the city’s future.
